Pari - Not A Fairytale review: To start with, this is not your usual 'Bollywood' horror flick. This film does not deal with ghosts, it does not try to make you scared with cheap thrills or nerver-rattling music.
This movie does not feature scantily clad B-grade actresses under the waterfall or in a bathtub, it does feature a 'tantric' sitting with obviously fake skulls and bones, chanting hocus-focus and trying to rid a peculiar and fake looking 'Aatma', with very bad makeup in reddish light.
If your expectations from a Hindi movie are these, then please do not bother to watch this movie. On the other hand, if your liking is towards thriller-horror with the right amount of emotion and a story-line, like the Hollywood trend-setters like Species or Splice, then this is definitely a movie you will like. No, I am not saying this has the class or the lavishly spent special effects.
I am referring to the story-line only. Pari is obviously influenced by the movies I mentioned and takes heavily from their story-line. But the similarity stops there, Pari, essentially, is very much an Indian concept with concepts from the existing religions and our belief in the supernatural, the evil powers and the concept of Yan-yang or Good has Evil and vice versa. Pari is the story of Arnab Bagchi, played by one of my favorite Bengali actors of today - Parambrata Chattopadhyay.
Arnab is a shy young man looking to get married, In the process, while returning home amid torrential down pore, finds a distraught Rukshana in the middle of a jungle. He decides to help her out of compassion and guilt (why? You need to watch it to know) decides to help her.
In doing so, he gets close to Ruksana. What follows are array of strange and seemingly meaningless events. These incidents and their explanation is what this film is all about. Without spoiling the story any further, let me talk about the other factors of the film.
The director Prosit Roy is no expert, however still manages to pull a decent film, owing massively to the very slick editing of the film. You would not sit idle and bored even for a second, specially in the first part of the film. Cinematography is dark and disturbing. In the acting department, Mr. Chattopadhyay does his best and nails the role of a true Kolkata guy, living alone in the city. Rajat Kapoor is convincing as the Bangladeshi Mauluvi, with a mission.
But the one who steals the Thunder is Anushka Sharma, playing the role of the mysterious Shakina. She is very dark, intense and scary, along with being sweet, caring, child-like. That is a strange combo and Ms. Kohli wins from the very start. She plays this contradicting personality role to absolute perfection. Again, if you can keep a 'clean' head, with no expectations and are a fan of unconventional horror - do watch it. If not, please do not. My rating 3 1/2 out of 5, with another 1/2 marks extra for Mrs. Virat Kohli. Well done lady, you definitely deserve a nomination in the next Filmfare.
